Cahaba Medical Care is offering PrEP!

What is PrEP?

  • PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication used to prevent HIV infection in individuals who are HIV negative.

  • Descovy and Truvada are two medications that have been FDA approved for PrEP. PrEP is a once daily medication and has been proven to reduce risk of HIV infection. It works by preventing the virus that causes HIV infection from multiplying in your body after exposure.

 Who is PrEP for?

PrEP is for anyone who is currently HIV negative and at an increased risk for being exposed to HIV infection. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Individuals who are HIV negative and in an intimate relationship with a partner that is HIV positive

  • Heterosexual individuals who have multiple sexual partners and don’t routinely use condoms

  • Anyone who has been diagnosed with a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) in the last 6 months

  • Men who have intercourse with men without use of condoms, regardless of sexual orientation

  • Intravenous (IV) drug users

  • Those who exchange sexual favors for money, food, housing, drugs or other goods and services

Why should I consider PrEP?

HIV is a contagious illness that currently has no cure. Over time, HIV weakens the immune system until the body can no longer fight off diseases or infection. Many of those who are initially infected with HIV will often not show any symptoms, or may only have mild cold/flu-like symptoms, and do not realize they are living with HIV until the illness has progressed or is found incidentally. Per the Alabama Department of Public Health’s Annual HIV Surveillance Report, it’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people who live in Alabama with HIV may not even be aware of their HIV positive status. HIV infection that goes untreated will cause severe illness and  death. PrEP, when used as prescribed, can reduce your risk of contracting HIV infection through intercourse by 99% (CDC.gov).
