Looking for purpose & impact?

Cahaba is a family of providers that have committed to using
healthcare to make a measurable dent in the universe.

We are driven by the conviction that quality care should be easily accessible to all regardless
of where you come from, the color of your skin, or how much money you have.

Why do I work at Cahaba? The vision of helping people that wouldn’t get help anywhere else! I look at it like this: it could be me one day that is sick and has no way to get the proper care, and to be able to come to a doctor’s office and get care, see a counselor, go to the food bank, and even get my eyes checked is a plus. I call it a one stop shop! [When] you come here as a patient and we will take care of you from head to toe!

What working at Cahaba means to me: Inspiration and dedication.
— Sharay Shanes, Lead Medical Assistant • West End • Employed since 2017
Working at Cahaba means I get to enjoy my family and my co-workers, who quickly became my family. Being able to come to a place that I enjoy means that I can provide passionate work, which in turn contributes to this small community I call home.

Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, & Justice

Cahaba Medical Care is founded on the principles of love, peace, and justice. And when this foundation is threatened for our teammates and patients, we must stand. We must speak. And we remain committed until true change finally occurs.

Therefore we should listen to and speak for our patients and coworkers who:

  • Have been victims of brutality in all its forms.

  • Are denied justice and the presumption of innocence.

  • Economically disenfranchised or impoverished with little hope of relief.

  • Are suffering from healthcare disparities.

At Cahaba Medical Care, we have long-standing internal commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural humility, to our teammates and employees, as well as to our patients. We hire locally, and we live and serve and love in our communities, both rural and urban. And we go to great lengths to achieve benchmarks like the HRSA Health Equity Award that we have carried these last five years that measures our success in caring for those who have been silenced and ignored.

One of Cahaba’s Core Culture Competencies (C4-32) is to “Respect Others” and have the “humility and lack of ego” to “stay curious and empathetic.” We do not lose sight of the fact that “impact is not the same as intent” but “instead, give love and respect, seek to understand, and have the humility to apologize.” What this embodies is Allyship, which is the “continuous process in which someone with privilege and power seeks to first learn about the experiences of a marginalized group of people, and then ultimately empathizes with their challenges and build relationships with that group of people.”

Over the course of Cahaba’s history, and the last few years especially, we have listened and have heard from many employees and patients who were outraged, hurt, and even traumatized over recent events, and the unequivocal message is that we must now listen… and listen to understand so that we can help give voice to experiences and feelings.

The Bible exhorts us to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice” (Proverbs 31:8-9 NLT). In this era of divisiveness, let us be different. Let us be about C4-32. Let us “Respect Others” and have the “humility and lack of ego” to “stay curious and empathetic.” We do not lose sight of the fact that “impact is not the same as intent” but “instead, give love and respect, seek to understand, and have the humility to apologize.” And how will we do this? How shall we proceed? “‘For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Cahaba Culture

In 2019, after more than a year of reading and exhortation and contemplation, and, in hindsight, good timing, we were determined to, “create the culture we want, rather than live with the culture that emerges by default.”- From this emerged our Cahaba Core Cultural Competencies, or C4s, in recognition of the wisdom that “every organization, whether by design or by accident, has a specific culture,” and that, “absent intentionality on our part, a baseline culture would be created anyway, mostly influenced by those with the strongest personalities.”

We want to be intentional, and also practical, about creating a culture of grace and service - as well as resilience. We also wanted culture to not be merely aspirational vision and values, but pragmatic behaviors that everyone could make routine.

We believe that our level of success in caring for our patients and communities will be deeply affected by the strength of our daily habits, processes, values, and relationships, and in each arena, there is room to prepare ourselves culturally – behaviorally – to be our best in much the same way we prepare ourselves to administer a shot, take a history, meet a need, or heal a wound.

Some challenges we face are mammoth, like a pandemic. But in our work, we face other challenges every day and we make choices about the way we will go. Will we be gracious to a colleague or will we respond in irritation or even anger? Will we take responsibility or will we deflect blame? Will we show compassion to a struggling patient or will we push forward with our busy day?

We want to create a culture of resilience that allows us to conquer not only generational challenges like COVID but to approach every day with vigor and integrity, to be present with our patients, colleagues, families - “to be content in any and every circumstance.”

To be present for our patients means to be resilient against the challenges of our days. To prepare ourselves inside and out. To come in everyday with a determined smile behind the masks we don day in and day out.
