Cahaba Delivers 500th Baby at Bibb Medical Center

Cahaba Medical Care and Bibb Medical Center are celebrating a significant milestone this month. The Labor and Delivery Unit at BMC recently welcomed a newborn baby, marking the unit’s 500th delivery since reopening the department in 2015. Labor and delivery departments are diminishing in most parts of rural Alabama, which left the community of Bibb County without a nearby labor and delivery unit for over 16 years. Thankfully, the L&D unit at BMC was reopened in a strategic partnership with Cahaba Medical Care and operates under a unique model championed by Cahaba’s CEO, Dr. John Waits, COO, Dr. Lacy Smith, their team of delivering physicians, and Bibb Medical Center’s CEO, Joseph Marchant. Dr. Elizabeth Lee had the privilege of delivering Ms. Nakea Morrison’s baby boy, Kiari Amir Morrison, on October 18th, 2022. Bibb Medical Center celebrates each new mother with a steak dinner during their hospital stay, but to commemorate this special delivery, Ms. Morrison and baby Kiari were also gifted 500 diapers, 500 wipes and a generous gift basket from Cahaba and Bibb Medical Center. Both BMC and Cahaba Medical Care are thankful to the families in the community for the trust they’ve placed in the delivery and care of their newborns and look forward to continuing to provide quality care for future expectant mothers and their babies.

“When I started my medical journey, I knew I wanted to help people in rural and underserved communities access medical resources, like labor and delivery. This milestone for Bibb Medical Center is a wonderful demonstration of how we’ve been able to accomplish this goal, and we are so excited to be announcing the 500th delivery in this area. We hope to continue providing these mothers with peace of mind knowing they can access the medical services they need, when they need them, without having to travel great distances,” said  Dr. Waits, CEO of Cahaba Medical Care Foundation.
